The U.S. House of Representatives has passed the SAVE America Act, a bill co-sponsored by Congressman Mike Haridopolos (FL-08), aimed at strengthening election integrity for federal elections. The legislation introduces requirements for voter identification and proof of citizenship.
“Secure and fair elections are the foundation of our democracy,” said Congressman Mike Haridopolos. “Every eligible American citizen deserves to know that their vote counts. Requiring photo ID and proof of citizenship is a common-sense step to restoring trust in our elections.”
Although current federal law restricts voting in federal elections to U.S. citizens, inconsistencies in state-level rules have resulted in non-citizens and other ineligible individuals appearing on voter rolls. Most states require some form of identification at polling places, but 14 states do not mandate photo identification, which has raised concerns about the security and reliability of election processes.
The SAVE America Act seeks to address these issues by requiring voters to present a photo ID when voting in federal elections. Absentee and mail-in voters would also need to include a copy of their photo ID with their ballots. The act updates the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) so that documentary proof of U.S. citizenship must be provided in person during registration for federal elections.
Other provisions require states to review and verify voter rolls monthly to identify non-citizens or other ineligible registrants, establish procedures for resolving documentation discrepancies—such as those caused by name changes or clerical errors—and permit eligible voters to register and submit proof of citizenship by mail if early voting or same-day registration is allowed.
If required documentation is unavailable on Election Day, eligible voters would be able to cast provisional ballots under this legislation.
The bill will now proceed to the U.S. Senate for further consideration.
