CITY OF CAPE: City Event Cancellations

Cancel

City of Cape Canaveral issued the following announcement.

In an abundance of caution-and due to Brevard County issuing a local state of emergency-the City continues to take immediate measures in response to the outbreak of COVID-19.

All City hosted/organized/sponsored public events and gatherings through the remainder of March 2020 have been cancelled. Many of the City’s gatherings often see members of our elderly population attend, a group known to be the most vulnerable to the virus.

Canceling all City hosted/organized/sponsored public events and gatherings has been recommended by the Florida Governor’s office and Federal officials from various health organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Currently, this notice directly affects the following City hosted/organized/sponsored public events and gatherings:

— City Council Meeting: Tuesday, March 17

— Code Enforcement Hearing: Tuesday, March 24

— 2020 Strategic Planning Retreat: Wednesday, March 25

— Coffee with the Interim City Manager: Thursday, March 26

— Sea Turtle Talk with the Sea Turtle Preservation Society: Thursday, March 26

— All hosted/organized/sponsored Leisure Services classes and activities

Other uses of City facilities, to include Leisure Services, remain operationally normal.

Brevard County has not yet cancelled polling operations scheduled for March 17, 2020. We will update when we learn more.

Throughout the month, City Staff will reassess the situation of the COVID-19 outbreak and take appropriate measures to either continue the cancellation of all City hosted/organized/sponsored public events and gatherings or resume such activities. Cancellations will also include internal Staff conferences and trainings. At this time, all City departments, buildings and daily operations will remain open.

Residents are also encouraged to practice social distancing in public spaces (at least 6 feet from other persons, according to the CDC) and reconsider attending large gatherings for the next several weeks. Other CDC recommendations include:

— Avoid close contact with people who are sick.

— Stay home when you are sick.

— Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

— Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

— Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially before eating, after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing and certainly if your commute includes public transit.

— If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol. Always wash hands with soap and water if your hands are visibly dirty.

— Face masks should be used by people who show symptoms of COVID-19 to help prevent the spread of the disease to others. The purpose of a face mask is to prevent droplets from sneezing and coughing from becoming airborne.
