City Of Melbourne issued the following announcement on July 10.
The City of Melbourne Environmental Community Outreach (ECO) Division is encouraging residents to participate in the international “No Butts About It! Summer Litter Cleanup Contest.” Cigarette waste is a big part of the litter problem in City of Melbourne, most significantly at beaches like Paradise Beach Park, at store plazas and at other places of high foot traffic. Though small, cigarette butts do not biodegrade and are harmful to the environment. Cigarette butts discarded in roadways often end up washing into stormdrains and into the Indian River Lagoon.
